Thomas Edwin Sawyer

Tom was born in Lakeland, Florida on February 12th, 1927. He graduated from Lakeland High School. He married Rita Meehan on July 5th, 1958. They celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary this year.

After serving time supporting his country in the military, the Merchant Marines and U.S. Navy where he is a WWII Veteran, Tom adopted a number of hobbies which included building his dream home in the mountains of Fines Creek, North Carolina, spending time with all of his grandchildren, becoming a renowned member of the prestigious Tennessee Squires, preserving his love for the movies and of course, never missing 5 O’clock Tee Time.

Tom worked in the theatre industry his entire life. He began as an usher (at the age of 17) and after several management positions became Vice President. His first management position was with Florida State Theaters managing the Lake Theatre in Lakeland, Florida and later the Polk Theatre. During his career he spent time with ABC Theaters, Plitt Theaters, and ultimately retired from Carmike Theaters at the age of 75-a career span of 58 years.

In addition to Rita, He is survived by his children Thomas (Martha), Tori (Steve), Scott (Sarah) and Pam (Carlos). Grandchildren; Thomas Jr., Sarah (JD), Austin (Stephanie), Collin (Shelby), Trey, Sawyer, Macy, Dalton, Kierston, Wyatt and Will. Great grandchildren; Brooklyn and baby Tripp who is on the way!

We honor Tom by living out his positive and optimistic mindset. When asked what his best advice for the younger generation is, he answered, “Every morning when you wake up, let your feet hit the floor and say, ‘I’m going to be happy today, I feel good, and life is good.’”

Enjoy a drink of Jack Daniels in memory of Tom Sawyer and honor all those you love.

The family will hold a private service at a later date.
