I worked with Nancy in the Jacksonville Office. Such a beautiful soul. Nancy would crack me up each time she would come into the office. I will cherish the bracelet she made for me. RIP NANCY

I worked with Nancy and the Master Gardeners at the Heritage Garden at the beach for three years.  Nancy was a wealth of knowledge about her herbs and I always looked forward to her smiles and our chats on our work days. May she Rest In Peace and my thoughts and prayers to her husband and family.

It was a delight to work with Nancy at the Heritage Gardens.  She was very talented and will be greatly missed.   My prayers are with the family.  Jan Young

Photo Caption:  Nancy Ballas, a volunteer at the Heritage Garden in Jacksonville Beach has created a tropical garden which extends her living spaces outdoors throughout the seasons.  She has limited tuff grass in her back landscape with decking, garden paths, and special planting beds, creating special microclimates in her landscape to extend more tender warm season blooms into the holidays. 
This past week, Nancy Ballas hosted the Master Gardeners who volunteer at the Heritage Garden at her home and garden in Jacksonville Beach for a holiday lunch. One of the most striking things to me at her garden was the seamless flow of interior gathering places with outdoor open-air garden spaces.  Her landscape is decidedly tropical with many tender plants.  Even after the severe freeze last winter, she had many large specimens that would typically be too tender for most of our winters.  Even a mild winter can do serious damage to our more tender tropical plants.
I asked Nancy about some of her large containers in the garden, and learned that on the coldest nights she does move some into a sunroom to minimize damage. 

I will miss knowing Nancy is no longer with us here.  I am still in disbelief.  I was not close to her in our latter years but rather when we were both new to moving to the beach.  She from St. Augustine and I from Jacksonville.  Our husbands knew each other from Orange Park.  We met on South Street and had the greatest of times.  We went on to marry within a year of each other and have Kris and my daughter Lisa with weeks of each other.  

Both husbands did not realize we had a plan.  They always thought it was a coincidence.


She brought life into every gathering and always stayed positive and focused on where she was going.  Much smarter than some of my choices at the time.  She was my dearest friend during the early years of our children growing up.  She was their Aunt Nancy. 

Her smartest choice was finding her life partner,  George, her wonderful husband.

I would like to extend my sincerest condolences to George, Kris, Cindy and Tracy for your loss.

I am thankful for all the wild and wonderful memories together with Nancy at the Homestead.  Nancy could make you smile even in the worst of times.  My condolences.

I first met Nancy 4 years ago when I started volunteering at the Beaches Museum Heritage Garden.  Nancy was friendly and welcoming, and I always have appreciated that. It was one of her gifts to make people feel special. I feel lucky to have known her. I will keep George and family in my prayers. 

I still can't believe you are gone.  You will always be in my heart. The good times we had at work, luncheons and happy hours.  I will cherish our  last conversation we had after your admittance to the hospital.   You were an amazing woman.  Much love to George, Kris, your sisters, and family.  Many hearts are hurting. Nancy and I met during our time working at Home Goods and from the start, I knew I liked her.  We shared our love for gardening although she was much better at it. We had us some good laughs and I always looked forward to running into her around town. She was indeed a lovely lady and I will miss her. 

I am so sorry for your loss. I babysat Christopher in the 70's and have such wonderful memories of Nancy! 

Theresa (Connard) Garrett

I met Nancy in 1969 in college in Art History class. I liked her immediately! We have remained close friends for over 51 years! We’ve shared many life changing events together. Nancy was in my wedding! We traveled to NYC together numerous times. She came to the Keys fishing with us, She and George shared many trips to the Lake and NC to share big laughs and good times with great friends and family over the years! We’ve shared countless Get Togethers  and Domino Extravaganzas with all of the Original BB’s and Brother Boy! 
Nancy, old Friend, YOU know you will be missed. We LOVE you  and MISS YOU dearly! Rest assured, we will be looking out for George.

Oh my gosh, I am so very sorry for your loss.  Nancy was a sweet, kind, fun, happy and thoughtful friend. She was a mentor to me at HomeGoods and always told me don't worry it'll be fine.  Please know I share your sadness.
