Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of Rudolph A. and Emma Ranft Prosswimmer. Alan was raised on Long Island and graduated from Amherst College. After serving in the U.S. Army, Alan received an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In 1955, Alan met and married Mary Anne Johnston. Together they raised 5 energetic children in New Canaan, CT.
Alan’s business career covered more then 40 years with increasing responsibility in operational and financial positions with three Fortune 500 companies in the glass, forest products and steel industries. His extensive treasury and controllership experience lead to a position of Chief Financial Officer in two of these corporations. He was also President of a small, highly specialized firm engaged in Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs).
Upon his retirement in 1991, Alan and Mary Anne moved to Amelia Island, Florida. It was there that he spent 16 years in his favorite job as an Operations Manager at the Golf Club of Amelia Island. Alan was affectionately known there as “Crash” for reasons obvious. Socializing with members, guests and staff became his joy. During these years Alan and Mary Anne were also able to travel the world.
In 2008, Alan and Mary Anne moved to Cypress Village in Jacksonville, Florida. Never one to actually retire, Alan was active in the residents council, serving as President for 3 years and as trustee of the community funds. To his wife’s astonishment, Alan was rarely able to refuse a request to participate in a community program or an advisory group when asked.
Alan will be fondly remembered for his dry wit, curiosity, integrity and his appreciation for a good beer.
He is predeceased by his parents, a son, Randy Prosswimmer and sister and brother-in-law Ann and Bob Pratt.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Anne; his sister Nancy Conroy (Penny Ebbitts) of Minneapolis, MN; his daughter Carlene Bruno (Paul) of Jacksonville Beach, FL; his sons Jeffery of Carlsbad, CA, Marshall (Richard Batting) of Fair Haven, NJ and Eric (Karen) of Jacksonville Beach, FL; his grandchildren Paul Bruno (Mandy), Carly Shepherd, Amanda Lehr (Christian), Matt Bruno, Siena Prosswimmer, Katelyn Shepherd, Tatum Prosswimmer, Camille Prosswimmer and Randy Prosswimmer. He is also survived by four great-grand children and five nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that anyone wishing to make donations in Alan’s name may send them to Cypress Village Community Fund, C140, 4600 Middleton Park Circle East, Jacksonville, FL 32224
A celebration of Alan’s life will be held from 3 to 5 pm on Sunday, June 24th at Egret Hall, Cypress Village. 4600 Middleton Park Circle East, Jacksonville, FL 32224. All are welcome.
