Funeral services for Walter S. Hendrix, Jr. will be held at First Baptist Church, Jackson, Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Roger Abington officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens.
Walter S. Hendrix, age 81, died May 29, 2010 at his home. He was born December 7, 1928 in Osceola, Arkansas, the son of the late Walter S. Hendrix, Sr. and Rebecca Smith Hendrix.
Walt was a graduate of Osceola, AR High School and Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, AR, where he was editor of the student newspaper, pitcher for the varsity baseball team and a member of Army ROTC. He also did graduate work at the University of Texas (Austin). He served as an Infantry officer in Europe, and went on to serve in Infantry and Special Forces units in the National Guard and Army Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
He retired from the Social Security Administration in 1995 after 41 years of service, the last 21 as manager of the Jackson district office. He received a total of 16 Federal service awards, and was cited in the U. S. Congressional Record for his broad Federal and community service.
He was past president of the Jackson Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow and two-time Outstanding Rotarian of the Year and had 41 years of perfect attendance. His involvement in civic activities over the years included past chairman of the Madison County Red Cross, the United Way public service division, Literacy Volunteers, served on the Youth Town of Tennessee board, served as a lay-pastoral care volunteer for Jackson-Madison County General Hospital and served many other agencies and boards. He was an Eagle Scout and a past chairman of the West Tennessee Central District of the Boy Scouts of America.
Walt was a member of First Baptist Church, Jackson and served as a deacon. He was a Life Master Mason, as well as a member of the Scottish Rite and the Al Chymia Shrine.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Moss, Vera Erwin and Becky Williams and six brothers, Harold, Fred, Frank, Richard, Boyd and Jon Hendrix.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marilyn, two sons, Mark Hendrix and wife, Karen of Columbia, MO and Scott Hendrix of Manhattan, KS and one daughter, Shan Whiston and husband, Tony of Quincy, IL and four grandchildren, Grant and Blake Hendrix and Peyton and Palmer Whiston and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation with the family will be held at the funeral home Tuesday, June 1 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and also on Wednesday, from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
