Nathan Lynn Johnson was born November 23, 1931 to John Lee Johnson and Avis Fanning Johnson at the family home in Goat City, near Medina, TN. As a young child, Nathan moved to Jackson, TN with his family. His interest as a teenager and young adult was baseball, where he earned the nickname “Speedy” from his neighborhood teammates and that name stuck with him throughout his life. Nathan met the love of his life, Cleita Faye Sipes, while they were students at Jackson High School. They were married soon after graduation and have celebrated 67 years of marriage devoted to each other. He is survived by his wife Faye and their four children, Tony (Suzi) Johnson, Vicky (Bill) Forsythe, Ronnie (Susan) Johnson and Cindy (Larry) Bell;11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His surviving brothers are Howard Johnson and Glenn Johnson.
Nathan and Faye have been active members at Poplar Heights Baptist Church for over 60 years where he had served as long-time deacon and trustee, member of various committees and former Sunday School teacher. In recent years Nathan found joy in greeting members and visitors with a smile and a piece of their favorite candy. He was affectionately known as “the candy man”, a nickname given by a dear friend, Gary Coad. In the church and community alike, Nathan was always eager to help anyone in need, in true servant-hood to his Lord Jesus. Growing up with good work ethics, Nathan mastered the skill and was a perfectionist at plastering.
As a contractor he worked tirelessly in many homes and businesses in and around Jackson. Then seeking a different career, Nathan became interested in real estate and has been in that profession, as Johnson Properties in downtown Jackson for many years, helping many people with housing. In his time off, Nathan enjoyed reading historical books, medical books pertaining to his and Faye's health, and his Bible.
Nathan Johnson has had a good life and touched many people. He will be greatly missed by Faye and family and all who knew him. In past years Nathan loved walking on the sandy beach, but now he is walking on streets of gold. We all take comfort In knowing he is pain-free and worshipping God in heaven. SERVICES: Visitation will be Sunday, April 2, 2017 at Poplar Heights Church from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. The funeral service will be at 4:00 pm and burial will follow at Ridgecrest Cemetery.
