Funeral services for Mamie Meriwether Avery, age 90. will be conducted on Monday, November 27, 2017, at 1:00 pm from the South Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with Robert A. Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow at Ebenezer Cemetery in Malesus.
Mrs. Avery died November 23, 2017, at Maplewood Healthcare. She was born June 28, 1927, to the late John Henry and Mamie Caldwell Meriwether of Jackson.
She graduated from Jackson High School and then attended Ward Belmont in Nashville with a major in Harp. Upon graduation, she worked at the Hermitage Hotel in Nashville where she played the harp in the dining room during the lunch and dinner hours. She was a harpist, homemaker , and Sunday School teacher who was an active member of Parkway Southern Methodist Church and later Malesus United Methodist Church. She was a great Southern lady, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and daughter, and she will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Avery was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 58 years, Charles Porter Avery, Sr., and her son Charles Porter Avery III of Munford. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Evelyn Avery Milton and husband Russ of Pinson, and her daughter-in-law Lesa Avery of Munford. Other survivors include four grandchildren, Emily Kalmon, Christopher Avery, Rhen Milton, and Bethany Milton, and two great-grandchildren, Hailey and Ian Kalmon.
Visitation with the Avery family will be held on Monday from 11:00 am until the time of the service at 1:00 pm in the South Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons.
