George Oliver Dorris, 83, of Jackson passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at his home surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 1 p.m. in the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons with interment to follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. Montie Matlock will deliver the eulogy.
Mr. Dorris was born on May 2, 1930 in Madison County to the late Victor and Gladys Dorris. He received his education in the Madison County School System. As a member of the 5th Regimental Combat Team, he served two years of active duty in the Korean War. After returning home, he continued a family tradition of commercial sign painting. In 1968, he formed a partnership with friend Reggie Smith and they began Town and Country Realtors. Later, he became a home builder and property developer in the Jackson area. Mr. Dorris enjoyed many hobbies during his lifetime, but he especially loved to travel in his motor home.
Mr. Dorris was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Dorris; his son, Larry Dorris; and a brother, Neil Dorris.
He is survived by his daughter, Linda Johnson (Rob) of Pinson, TN; sisters, Mary Towater and Martha Gideon, both of Jackson; brothers Bruce Dorris (Dottie) of Jackson and Gene Dorris of Opelika, AL.
A visitation with the family will be held on Monday from 5-8 p.m. and on Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the service time at the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home.
