Mary’s pride and joy was her family. She loved to bake and, for a time, had her own business which she named, “Mary Made Cakes”. Her family always looked forward to the wonderful cakes she would bring to every family reunion, holiday, and other events. Mary also had an affection for dogs…Boxers in particular and would often count how many she’d had throughout her life. She was also known for her obsession with shoes and could never have too many.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Guyton Quitman Martin and Mary Louise Martin, siblings Burkett H. Martin, Robert G. Martin, Billie G. Martin, Joseph R. Martin, and Virginia M. Smith, a niece, Martha Talbot, a nephew, Clay Martin, and a step great grandchild.
She is survived by her sons Mike Winstead (Peggy) of Hoover, Alabama, Terry Winstead (Lisa) of Madison, Mississippi, and Steve Winstead of Ridgeland, Mississippi, four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, seven nieces and nephews, stepchildren Kathleen Lansing (George) of Richmond, Virginia, Jay Terry (Mary) of Colonial Heights, Virginia, and Robin Jones (David) of Wake Forest, North Carolina, nine step grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren.
Mary worked at Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Jackson, Mississippi prior to moving to Gulfport, Mississippi, where she worked at Bryant and Stennis Law Firm and Reichold Chemical Corporation. Later in life, she returned to Jackson, Mississippi and took a job with Fusilier, Ott, McKee, and Walker Law Firm. She took tremendous pride in her position as receptionist for this firm and remained in it until her retirement.
In 1995, upon her marriage to John Terry, whom she met as a child in Mississippi, Mary lived in Colonial Heights, Virginia. Following John’s death in 2018, she returned to Mississippi and resided at the Orchard Assisted Living Community in Ridgeland, MS, until her death.
Mary was well-loved by her family and friends and will be truly missed. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1, 2024, in the Chapel at Lakewood Funeral Home and Memorial Park in Jackson, Mississippi.
