She was the eldest of four daughters born to Wilbur and Mable Barker. She graduated from Huntington High School and married Drewie McClain Slay of Carthage, MS shortly after the close of World War II. They moved to Jackson, MS where Mr. Slay was engaged in automotive sales. They were married for forty-five years and had four children before he passed away at age 70. Dreama was employed by the Mississippi State Employment Security Commission until her retirement.
Following her retirement, she became an avid canasta player and took painting classes to learn how to create beautiful landscape portraits of the favorite places she had remembered and visited during her lifetime. She loved to line-dance and enjoyed performing for residents of local nursing homes. She also enjoyed bowling and was an active member of several local area bowling leagues. Dreama supported and participated in many activities enjoyed by her children during their formative years. She was a Girl Scout Brownie leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother, and never missed a football or baseball game while her sons played. She was a Sunday school teacher and church nursery supervisor for many years. She loved to travel and toured throughout England, Italy, and Europe.
Dreama will be best remembered for her beautiful smile, her generous, fun loving, and compassionate spirit. She deeply loved the Lord, her church, family, and friends. She was especially proud of, and survived by, her four children: Drewana (Leon) Slay Shaifer, Danny (Melinda) Slay, Dwaine Slay, and Derwin (Robin) Slay; thirteen grandchildren, Demarla Cothran Brinson, Danice Slay, April Gonzalez, Andy Slay, Dwaina Slay Lester, Christian Slay Turco, Lisa Slay Rumain, Erin Slay Purvis, Curry Slay Parkman, Emily Slay, Sally Shaifer Shook, Leigh Ann Shaifer Glover, Kate Shaifer Russell; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and fifteen great-great-grandchildren. Momo as she was affectionately named by her family, will be sadly missed.
