Betty Joann Smith, 88, of Madison, Mississippi passed away on December 2, 2024 after a prolonged illness. She was born on December 7, 1935, in Coila, Mississippi to John and Zona Mae Mulvihill. She graduated from Greenwood Leflore Nursing School and later completed her BSN at Mississippi College. She began her nursing career at the GV Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center and remained there until her retirement 37 years later. During the Vietnam War she joined the Mississippi Air National Guard as a flight nurse transporting wounded veterans from overseas.
She was married to Michael P Fedorak who preceded her in death in 1987 and later married Harry Smith who passed away in 1999. She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers James, Charles and Carl Mulvihill, sister Barbara Reap, nephews Van and Shawn Reap and nieces Cheryl Mulvihill and Sheila Reap. She leaves behind 2 sisters, Stella Hall and Teresa Mulvihill, sister-in-laws Helen, Ruby and Sarah Mulvihill and many nieces, nephews and cousins throughout the country. Betty lived a live filled with beauty and generosity and grounded by her strong Christian beliefs, her patriotism and her love for her family, friends and beloved dog Bella.
A visitation for Betty will be held Friday, December 6, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Twin Lakes Baptist Church, 673 Lake Cavalier Rd, Madison, MS, followed by a celebration of life at 11:00 a.m. Betty will be laid to rest in Lakewood Memorial Park.
