Norma Patricia “Pat” Stiles, 87, passed away on Monday, November 9, 2015. Born March 17, 1928 in Cleveland, OH, she was a daughter of the late Valeria and Inez Mercandetti Sossi. She was the wife of 66 years to the late Charles Arthur “Chuck” Stiles who passed away February 20, 2015.
Pat was an active member of Union United Methodist Church and the Aline Leitner Fellowship Sunday School Class. She taught Sunday School, Confirmation, and Disciple Bible Study. Pat was also a longtime Alto in the Choir and was very instrumental in the Union United Methodist Church Building Project.
A graduate of Ohio University, Pat earned her degree in Early Childhood Education. She was an elementary school teacher for many years prior to the birth of her children. She was involved with her children’s school activities, served on numerous boards, and was most affectionately known as “The Band Mom” for many of the students at Irmo High School. She loved her children and grandchildren and enjoyed traveling to visit her family. Pat loved collecting Native American art. She was an avid gardener, with a green thumb and the ability to grow beautiful orchids and other flowers. Because of her talent she and her husband, Chuck, received numerous “Yard of the Month” awards. Pat was an amazing and strong woman who loved her family, her friends and anyone she met. She was a two-time Breast Cancer Survivor. In recent years, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and following the death of her husband in February, Pat was lovingly cared for by the staff of Agape Assisted Living at Harbison where she resided until her passing.
She is survived by son, Mark S. Stiles (Paty) of Elkhart, IN; daughters, Kim L. Myers (Gerald) of San Diego, CA, and Lisa S. Henry (Ralph) of Lexington, SC; grandchildren, Mark Schilleman (Daniele), Rachel Smithson (Matthew), Jaime Genis, Christopher Henry, Alejandro Genis, Rachel Myers; great grandchildren, Tristan, Chloe, and Phoenix. She is predeceased by her sister, Olga Sossi, and brother, Frank Sossi.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church, or the C.A.R.T. Fund, “Coins for Alzheimer’s Reseach Trust” PO Box 1916, Sumter, SC 29151.
A memorial service for Norma will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 23, 2015 at Union United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. A reception will follow in the church.
