COLUMBIA - Memorial Service for Maurice Shepherd Moore, Jr., 92, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. Visitation will be from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Moore died Friday, March 23, 2018 at home. Born in Williamston, N.C., he was the son of the late Maurice Shepherd Moore, Sr. and Annie Carolina Thrower Moore. He was a wonderful father, lovingly called Papa, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother-in-law, and uncle.
Maurice served with the 1391st United States Army Air Force Base Unit as a Staff Sergeant during World War II, where he received numerous medals, badges and was honorably discharged. He graduated from Wake Forest in 1949 with a degree in Engineering and Biology. He taught high school Biology in Hartsville, S.C. before getting a job with Allied Chemical. He retired from Allied Chemical after 37 years and received 22 patents. Allied Chemical brought him to Hopewell, Va. and transferred him to Columbia, where he lived for 40 years.
He was a Master Gardener at the University of South Carolina and was the assistant to Dr. Nelson, where he helped set up the Fungi section of the Herbarium at the Campus. He enjoyed woodworking and built numerous wood creations for himself and his family. Maurice volunteered with the Lexington/Richland 5 School District in numerous elementary schools with Project Love. He was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church of Hopewell, Va. and St. Timothy’s Church in Columbia, where he served faithfully as Head of Education, an Elder, served on numerous boards, and was a trained lay leader. He created gardens at St. Timothy’s that are still maintained to this day.
Surviving are his daughters, Mrs. Cynthia Anne Moore of Petersburg, Va. and Kathryn Elizabeth Meetze (Harold) of Irmo, S.C.; five grandchildren, Jane Marie Moody (Adam), Gerald Moore, Beth Martens (Karl), Lee Meetze (Erica), Thomas Meetze (Tiffany); great-grandchildren, Lily Moore, Caleb Moody, Abigail Moody, Abram Moody, Karl Martens II, Kaeden Martens, and RoseHannah Dickinson.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Jane Goff Moore; infant daughter; daughter, Marsha Jane Moore Rayner; son-in-law, Joseph Moore; and grandson, Joseph “Joey” Moore.
Many thanks to Letrelle Cox for her love, support and help to our family while taking care of Maurice during his illness. Our heart felt thanks go out to the Irmo First Responders, the EMS crews, Irmo Police Officers, Irmo Investigative Division, and the Lexington County Coroner.
