James Bruce Mullins (Jim) of Columbia, SC passed away on Saturday, December 30th after a lengthy illness. He was the son of the late James and Betty Mullins. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his sister, April Smith. Survived by brothers Barry and Jerry (Susan).
Jim was born in Decatur, AL on December 2, 1950. He moved to Columbia when he was seven and remained here until his death.
Jim was a 1969 graduate of Columbia High School. Several months after graduation be began working for Allied Chemical, retiring after thirty-five years from what was then Honeywell.
From a young age Jim was into sports, playing baseball at an early age. This led to high school basketball which was followed by softball, bowling, fishing and hunting. While in high school, Jim developed a love of shooting pool.
This love followed him until his death.
Jim became an avid golfer in his thirties. He had a very competitive nature and thought losing was not an option! He belonged to Lexington County Golf Association and was the 2014 and 2021 LCGA Champion. Jim loved nothing better than spending Sundays on the golf course with his fellow golfers for whom he had immense love and admiration.
He was a devoted USC Gamecock fan, and for 12 years he enjoyed tailgating with his friends and family. Many memories were made during these years.
He enjoyed spending time with his family every summer at Garden City Beach; Playing golf with his son and son-in-law, playing games with the grandchildren and celebrating his youngest granddaughter's birthday were the highlights of his week.
As his health declined, he was no longer able to enjoy his Monday night pool games. He had the "gift of gab", and could just "hang out" for hours talking. As his voice and body became weaker he had to give up his Monday nights out. The reality set in and he realized his life was ending. He was on hospice for three weeks prior to his passing.
Jim loved his family. Anyone you talk to will confirm that he always talked about his love for them and his pride in them.
Jim is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Patty; Children, Tiffany Kohn (Mike), of Irmo, Jason (Stephanie) Gunnison, CO; Grandchildren: Reilly, Sophie and Avery Kohn; Eliana and Carter Mullins.
