Don was born in Lansing, Michigan in 1957 to Donald Edward Culver and Janet Faye Culver (nee Randall) and was a Military Brat from early childhood.
He enlisted into the United States Army at Baltimore, MD MEPS in 1976 as a Private, serving his way up and honorably retiring as Chief Warrant Officer 5 after nearly 27 years of service. Throughout his military career, Don along with his young growing family were stationed all over the map, including Germany, Sinai Peninsula, Hawaii and various locations within the Continental United States. Chief Culver served in numerous overseas campaigns, to include the Gulf War, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia earning a Bronze Star Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, amongst many others.
Following his retirement from the Army, he entered Civil Service for the Department of the Army and retired as LRC Maintenance Division Chief at Fort Jackson in 2020.
Don loved his wife and family more than anything and enjoyed spending time with them traveling and vacationing with Robin and the kids all over the land and high seas, enjoying Sundays on their boat, “The Culvers Quality Time,” followed by mandatory Sunday dinner. He had a near-perfect track record of showing up at his grandbabies sporting events, where he loudly cheered them on like a proud Papa-Bear. As Don aged, he went from playing softball and racquetball with his Army buddies to tennis with his wife and golf with his best friends. He was notorious for his house projects, the work on which never ended. His required perfection in his lawncare, with the pool crystal clear, and the back yard tidied up, to allow for a party at moment’s notice. In the recent year he enjoyed a special bond with his new found friend Chief the cat.
Don was preceded in death by his dear wife Robin, grandson Matty, sister Lynn and parents Donald and Janet. He is survived by his three children - Jeanne (Mickey) Edwards, Michael (Jason) Williamson and Donald (Olga) Culver, nine grandchildren – Hayden, Trey, Alyssa, Landon, Anna, Angelina, Cully, Clay and Milly, sisters Kathi, Fran, Coby and brother Bruce.
Interment service with Full Military Honors will be held at Fort Jackson National Cemetery on October 25, 2024 at 10:00 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life on October 26, 2024, at 2:00 PM at his residence in Irmo.
