COLUMBIA - A funeral service for Betty Hardee Epting, 80, will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church with a reception following from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. A visitation will be held Friday, April 6, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel.
Mrs. Epting returned to her maker and redeemer on April 3, 2018 after a long and sometimes difficult battle with Sjogrens Syndrome and related illnesses.
She was born in Loris, S.C. to the late Irene S. Hardee and Oscar M. Hardee on November 1, 1937. She was educated in Loris public schools and graduated from Palmer College in Columbia before beginning her career at the local V.A. Hospital. Her career was immediately cut short by a marriage to James Epting and she began to do what she always wanted, which was to be a stay-at-home mom and raise a family. In the early years of that endeavor, she worked many untold extra hours helping her husband develop a fledgling family business, which was essential to its early growth. She also worked as a bookkeeper at Epting Distributors in her later years.
Described by many as a caring, loving and beautiful individual she was an unassuming and totally unselfish person as she always preferred to give rather than receive. That was very apparent in the love, concern, and untold prayers she said for her grandchildren, whom she loved dearly.
Her one passion in life was her love for the Lord and she nurtured that passion through the love and support of the congregation at Redeemer Lutheran Church, where she was a lifetime member. Her smiling face will be missed by many.
She is survived by her husband, James L. “Jim” Epting, Jr.; sons, James L. “Jay” Epting III (Helen), Stephen, and Michael (Laurie); seven grandchildren, Rebecca, Rachel, Matthew, Brian, Haley, Colin and Ryan; her sisters, Rebecca Willis (James) and Ramona Floyd (Wendell). She was predeceased by her brother, Jimmy Hardee and her parents, Oscar and Irene. She is also predeceased by her granddaughter, Erin Nicole Epting.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Building Fund at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 525 St. Andrews Rd, Columbia, SC 29210.
