Floyd Lee Browning Sr.(aka “Grumpy”) age 93 of Spring Branch, Texas went to claim his promised eternal home with his Lord and Savior on November 2, 2012. He is now walking with his friend Jesus as he has looked forward to for many years.
He dedicated his life and soul to his Lord on the beaches and battlefields of Italy, France and Germany during WW II. He prayed to the Lord to spare his life from the insanities of war and if he was allowed to live through the nightmare of battle, he would dedicate his life to serving his Master in whatever way that should be required of him. Floyd survived and kept his promise to live his life as a good Christian man following the Gospel of Jesus. He was thankful for every day for he knew it was a gift from God.
Those that knew and loved him will certainly grieve and weep at his passing from his earthly life. The tears wept should not be tears of despair and sadness but tears of joy because he is eagerly joining his heavenly family. Floyd’s years of torment from a chronic pain condition have ended and that is an additional reason to rejoice.
His earthly presence will be missed but his memory will live on in the hearts and minds of his loved ones until their time comes to join him and embrace him once more in Heaven. A place where there is no pain, no sadness, no despair, no struggles but only love and respect and harmony.
It is no wonder that he is smiling broadly and his eyes are twinkling as he looks down on the ones he has left behind. He looks forward to his loved ones joining him and experiencing the happiness he is now enjoying.
Floyd was born January 31st, 1919 in Electra, Texas to Arthur and Jewel Browning. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur Jr, who perished in WW II and two Sisters, Jarvis Talley and Odell Price.
One of those crying tears of joy will be his wife of 72 years, Willie Jewel, with whom he had three sons, Ronald Wayne of Spring Branch, TX, Billy Bob and wife Linda of Roswell, GA and Floyd Jr. of Spring Branch, TX. Also rejoicing will be four grandchildren, Staci Welsh of Katy, TX , Kendel Dolen of Spring, TX. Teresa Strafford of Flower Mound, TX and Devin Browning of Roswell, Ga. Floyd also has four grandchildren by marriage; Angela Batty of Ace, TX, Tony Horton, Mike Horton and Stephanie Madzy all of Spring Branch, TX. They will be joined in the chorus by nine great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Last but not least in joining the chorus will be long time family friends, Diane Ross of Flower Mound, TX and Jeannie Hall of Houston, TX.
“Grumpy” will also be leaving behind his faithful Dachshund “Dexter”.
Floyd served his country in the US Army’s Texas’ 36th Infantry Division (Arrowhead) from 1940 to 1945. The fighting 36th battled its way across North Africa and across the Mediterranean Sea to Southern Europe; from Naples, Foggia and Rome in Italy through Southern France and on into the Rhineland.
His service won him the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal w/4 Bronze Service Stars, the Bronze Star Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
His military service resulted in a service connected disability that increased to 100 % in his later life. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans Association.
Floyd will be interred with full military honors.
After the war he struggled to fit back into civilian society while his wife, Willie Jewel, continued her role as homemaker. Floyd eventually settled into a career as a salesman providing his growing family with a typical middle class lifestyle.
Throughout his life, “Grumpy” remained an avid yet on occasion a frustrated Dallas Cowboy fan. The Cowboys erratic performance the last few years in all likely hoods exacerbated his ‘Grumpy” demeanor!
His work on this earth has ended and a new and wonderful eternal adventure with his Lord in Heaven begins. REJOICE, HALLELUJAH and AMEN.
Floyd was a member of the Spring Branch Baptist Church in Spring Branch, Texas.
“Grumpy” will be interred in the family gravesite at Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park, Texas. The family called this friendly city their home for over 50 years.
The family will receive friends at Dutton Funeral Home in Iowa Park, Texas on Sunday, November 4, 2012 from 3-5 PM for viewing. A graveside service will be held at 10 AM on Monday, November 5, 2012 at Highland Cemetery with Rev. Rod Payne officiating.
