Age 96, passed away peacefully in Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital surrounded by family on March 19, 2020. Born on November 4, 1923 in Boston, and raised by her grandparents and aunt and uncle in Belle Cote, Inverness County. Pearl was the daughter of Ida Phillips, and raised by grandparents Isabelle and Kenneth Phillips and Aunt and uncle Irene and Henry Phillips. Pearl was educated in Belle Cote and taught school prior to entering nursing school. Pearl worked as a Registered Nurse at the old Inverness Memorial Hospital in 1945, then moved to Montreal to pursue further nursing opportunities. She returned to Cape Breton after one year and was employed at St Mary’s Hospital and then in 1977 she moved to the new Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital and worked in the Emergency Department until her retirement in 1989.
Pearl is predeceased by her mother, grandparents, aunt and uncle. She is survived by her husband and soul mate, Earl Taylor; sisters-in-law, Audrey Timmons( Henry, deceased),Inverness; Shirley MacLellan (John) Arizona; and Trudy MacEwan (Fred Taylor, deceased), New Glasgow. You could not find Pearl without Earl and their beloved now deceased cat Tramp. Pearl is survived by many nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews , special cousins and many friends who were constant in her life. Earl and Pearl are Thankful for their wonderful neighbours especially Sandy MacLean.
Pearl was a member of St Matthews United Church and had a special affiliation to her Margaree Harbour Church (Calvin United), until her health declined, Pearl was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of St Matthews Church, Inverness, Ladies Auxiliary of Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, and Volunteered at Inverness Volunteer Fire Department and Inverness Food Bank. She also volunteered at the Inverary Manor, Inverness, Pearl loved to knit, cook and was well known for her baking. Her friend and neighbour John Ferguson always returned to university with a special care package of food and goodies. Earl would like to thank Dr. Lok, all staff of Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, all staff of Inverness Home support and Home Care, staff of Inverary Manor, Pearl’s hair dresser Tanya Beth Doucet who regularly made house calls when needed, housekeeper Ruby MacMillan, Kevin Deagle and staff of Inverness Funeral home, and all family, friends and neighbours who visited and helped out in any way. Your love, support and generosity will always be appreciated and remembered.
Cremation has taken place with funeral at a later date in St Matthews United Church, Inverness.
