Born on Mabou Ridge, June 17, 1930, Flora was the youngest of twelve children of the late Neil and Bessie Gillis. She is survived by her sister Kate Lyons, Southborough, MA and by sixteen nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters Margaret Haley, Sally Langille and Mary Catherine Gillis; by brothers Donald, John Archie, Dougall, Francis, Alex, Charlie and Angus, and by niece Betty Gillis Ouelette. After working in Massachusetts for several years, Flora returned to work on the family farm with her brothers Donald and John Archie. In later years she took excellent care of John Archie during his long term illness.
Flora loved animals; she always had a dog named Cindy and a cat named Smokey. She loved to socialize and people of all ages enjoyed her company. She had fun at many card plays, dances, bingos, ceilidhs and weddings. In September 2012, Flora moved to Green Meadows Seniors Home. With her quick wit and sense of fun she made many friends there. She welcomed anyone who would play cribbage with her and she was a keen competitor. She enjoyed the farm atmosphere, especially playing with the puppies. The family would like to thank Lee McCarron and the staff at Green Meadows for the excellent care and kindness they provided to Flora. We would also like to thank her friends in Mabou, whose help enabled her to stay in her own home as long as possible. The family also appreciates the many people who came to visit her in Antigonish. Visitation will be held in the Vestry of St. Mary’s Church, Mabou on Friday June 13, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday June 14 at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou with Fr. Angus Morris officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Church or St. Mary’s Parish cemetery, Mabou.
