It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Daniel Rankin of Mabou. Surrounded by family, he passed away peacefully in Dartmouth General Hospital on July 3, 2022. Daniel was born on February 17, 1943 to Johnny and Sally (Cameron) Rankin of Mabou. He is survived by his wife, Effie (née MacCorquodale) of North Uist, Scotland, his son, Allan (Jocelyn), his daughters, Mairi (Sefton) and Sara (Chris) and by his special grandson Lochlan; he is also survived by brothers, Angus F. (Anne), Harold Roderick (Paula) and Terry (Ella) and by sisters, Margaret (Rudy Lauzon), Donna Anne (I.D. MacDonald), Judy (Gerald MacDonald) and Janet (Hughie Francis MacDonald).
He was predeceased by both parents, brothers, Buddy (Kathleen), Cameron (Gerry), and John Gerard and by sisters Catherine Marie (Martin Cameron) Bessie (Malcolm MacDonald) and Mary Lorette (Donald Beaton).
Daniel began his teaching career in a one room school at West Lake Ainslie prior to graduating with a B.A. in 1969 from STFX. From then on, he taught at Mabou Consolidated School and acquired a Diploma in Library Science in 1977 from Strathclyde University in Scotland. He later worked for the Inverness County School Board in various capacities, but was particularly gratified by the success of the Librarianship Programme which he planned and introduced into the local schools.
Throughout his life, Daniel maintained a steadfast interest in politics while devoting much time and energy to furthering the aims of many community groups. He was very much in demand as an emcee at weddings, anniversaries and especially at fundraisers where his inimitable sense of humor was always a drawing card.
We wish to thank all medical personnel who cared for Daniel throughout his illness and would ask that, in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mabou or the Inverness Hospital Foundation.
Visitation will be in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou on Tuesday, August 2, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held in St. Mary’s Church in Mabou on Wednesday, August 3 at 11a.m. with Fr. Bernie MacDonald officiating.
