William "Bill" Naddy
94, passed away December 23, 2019 after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Therese (nee Curry) Naddy. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was a Chicagoan at heart, a resident of Indianapolis for more than 40 years, and North Kingstown, RI for almost 20 years.
Bill graduated from his beloved Mount Carmel High School in Chicago, St. Benedict’s College in Kansas, and the wartime Harvard Business School in Massachusetts. He was a Navy officer who served in the South Pacific during WWII.
Bill excelled in Sales and Marketing and spent many of his working years in the housing industry. He was proud to note that he contributed to the success of his employer through the development and implementation of crimped aluminum skins for use on trailers. In fact, the company controlled 1% of post-War aluminum, and would have used more if not for post-war restrictions.
When not on the road, Bill enjoyed spending time with his wife, whom he called his “Everlovin.” He enjoyed bringing home recipes to have Terry prepare for Sunday dinners.
Bill could build anything and was a designer and inventor at heart. Many a Saturday was spent in his workroom sawing and hammering to remodel or make furniture. In his mid-60s he obtained a general contractor’s license and built homes for two of his children. In his 80s he received a US patent for his Open Gutter Strainer invention. He was an accomplished artist who spent much of his later years painting ship scenes and still lifes. His style was all Bill — colorful and graphical, whimsical yet clean and crisp.
He enjoyed making Hoolio puppets that lined the walls of his porch. One of his favorite Hoolios is entitled, “Bob Knight Responds to His Critics.” Bill loved writing and illustrating children’s books for his grandchildren. These books are treasured by them today.
Through the years of nighttime bottles for his nine children, Bill became a student of the Civil War — reading while his babies fed. He remained an avid reader and very much enjoyed poetry by Kipling and Longfellow.
His greatest passion outside of his family included sailing on both Lake Michigan and his much-loved Narragansett Bay.
Bill enjoyed a clever prank, a good joke, and as a true Irishman could spin a tale like no other. He was always sure to include fun for each generation in his parties and family reunions.
As much as Bill was a prankster (Shamrock seeds or ants anyone?), Bill was a man of faith, honor, and family. He was devoted to his nine children, 10 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He will be sorely missed by his children Therese Severin (Fred), Mary Ann Naddy (Onno Boswinkel), William Naddy, Carol Sparhawk (Bob, deceased), Patrice Naddy, Carmel Harr (Andy), Julie Danielson (Morris), John Naddy (Rita), and Lisa Goertemiller (Kurt), grandchildren Eric Boswinkel (Jen), Jamie Schlesener (Mark), Bob Sparhawk (Mal), Will Naddy, Peter Danielson, Hannah Naddy, Quinn Danielson, Andrew Danielson, and Denis and Maggie Harr. Great-grandchildren Ellie Boswinkel, Victor Schlesener, and Abby Boswinkel.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Indianapolis from 10:00am - 11:00am. Funeral Mass will immediately at the church. Burial will take place at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery.
