Born November 13, 1930 in Kell, IL, he was the son of Lawrence “Buck” and Elois “Short” McDaniel. He married his wife of 53 years, Lois (Settle) McDaniel on February 14, 1969. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his brother Don McDaniel, children Connie Helmer, Patty McBride, John (Missy) McDaniel, and Mary (Mickey) Caudillo. Wayne cherished his 14 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Nieces, nephews, cousins, bonus children and grandchildren all had a special place in his heart. Along with his parents, he was received in Heaven by his first wife Maxine Rector, brother Gene McDaniel, infant sister Mary McDaniel, and infant granddaughter Patty Helmer.
Wayne lived a full and rewarding life filled with love, faith, and family. He served in the Army during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion. He owned Wayne’s Carpet and Vinyl in Mt. Vernon, IL. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, storytelling, visiting with his brother, antique tool collecting, and building his grandchildren toy chests.
Wayne’s most important legacy was the relationships he built with his family, friends, and community. He never met a stranger and everyone was his “kin folk.” He will be remembered forever through his stories and life lessons focusing on love, kindness, and doing good deeds for each other.
Keeping with Wayne’s wishes, a private gathering to spread his ashes will be held at a later date.
