He received his education in the Mississippi Public School System. Sam confessed a hope in Christ at an early age at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Cleveland MS.
Sam moved to Indianapolis, IN in 1957. He joined Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in 1973. He was united in Holy Matrimony to Ruby Lewis in 1995. He later moved his membership to New Haven Missionary Baptist Church also in Indianapolis, IN, where he was a dedicated and devoted member of the deacon ministry.
Sam retired from Kilber Trucking Company after 30 years of service. He later established his own business, Sam Pallet Repair, in 1985 using one pick-up truck and a small garage. His very strong faith in the Lord led him to expand to a full fleet and staff. He didn’t stop working until the age of 88. He had a very strong work ethic.
Sam was a true man of God, and he was a praying man. He was a very unique person, one of a kind. He loved singing and he could really (butcher) a song. He loved his family and always encouraged them and others to do their best. Fashion was his passion; Sam was known as the suit man. He watched Cowboy movies and Wrestling on a regular basis. Sam enjoyed eating down home southern soul food that his wife prepared daily. A few of his favorite foods were jowl bacon and neck bones. He really enjoyed eating at buffet style restaurants.
Sam departed this life on Friday, November 22, 2019 at the age of 89.
He was preceded in death by both his parents; a son, Ivory Green; sisters, Aletha Hubbard and Stella Lewis; brothers, Harry Lewis, Jr., Freddy Lewis and Prentiss Lewis.
He leaves cherished memories to: A loving and devoted wife Ruby Nell Lewis; sister, Viola Fincher of Indianapolis, IN and brother, Joseph Lewis of Indianapolis, IN.
Sons, Travis Hodges (Michele), Kenneth Hodges, Donald Hodges (Tanya), William Whitson, Sr. (Pam), Stoney Whitson, Sr. (Pat), Tyron Whitson (Regina) and Gerome Whitson (Johanna).
Daughters, Marilyn Blair, Bonita Manning, Donna Hodges, Lisa Walker (Jon), Shelia Prewitt, Lawanda Whitson, Sonja Whitson, Rebecca Toler (Timothy) and Rejetta Enis and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Service for Sam will be held 12:00 pm, Saturday, November 30, 2019, at New Haven Missionary Baptist Church, 3418 Schofield Avenue, Indianapolis, Indiana, with visitation from 10:00 am, until time of service at 12:00 pm, all taken place at the Church.
Upon the family's request, disposition will be private.
