Bob was born in Indianapolis, IN to Dr. Earl & Enid Gilchrist on November 13, 1930. He graduated from Shortridge HS and attended Hanover College until he enlisted in the Navy to serve in the Korean War. He took 22 trips across the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS General Mann. He was happily married for over 60 years to Barbara Owen. Bob worked over 30 years for American Equipment but he lived for his weekend golf game and played his last 18 holes in September of this year – still able to often shoot his age. He also enjoyed cheering for his grandchildren on the sidelines or playing cards with everyone. He was always quick to engage in a friendly conversation or volunteer to help others.
Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara and brother, Dick and is survived by son, Brad (Caroline) of Zionsville, IN with grandsons Bryce and Trent (Caleigh), and daughter Sally (Randy Ban) of St Paul, MN and grandchildren Christian, Michael, Zachary and Leah and his sister, Betty (Tom) Mitchell of Zionsville, IN.
To honor his lifelong passion for golf and in support of the US Military, memorials may be given to ‘Birdies For The Brave’ at pgatourcharites.org.
A family burial will be held on Friday, Dec 18 at Crown Hill Cemetery with a celebration of life later in 2021.
