Obituary of Patricia "Patty" Carter Ruckelshaus
Patricia “Patty” Carter Ruckelshaus, 93, of Carmel, Indiana, departed this life on Wednesday, April 26, 2023. Patty was born in Indianapolis on April 12, 1930 to the late Wilbur and Ruth Carter. She grew up near Butler University. Patty graduated from Tudor Hall School and then earned a degree in education from Indiana University. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority. She was an officer for her family business, Carter-Lee Lumber Company. She was a kind and gentle soul who always gave of herself to others. Patty was a recipient of the Indiana State Volunteer of the Year Award. She enjoyed volunteering at Winona Hospital and Summer Trace Nursing Home. She belonged to the Junior League of Indianapolis and The Dramatic Club. Patty had an eye for architecture and interior design. She lived her life to the fullest. Patty was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 62 years, John C. “Jack” Ruckelshaus, II; her dear daughters, Lucinda Conley and Ruth Ruckelshaus. Patty is survived by her devoted children; daughter, Jacqueline (Joseph) Sergi; son, John (Mary) Ruckelshaus III; grandchildren, Jennifer (Dan) Demuth, Bryan Conley, Daniel Sergi, Emily (Brad) Piatt, Drew Ruckelshaus, Maggie Ruckelshaus and John C. "Jay" Ruckelshaus IV; great-grandchildren, Megan, Carter, Caden Demuth and Grayson and Brooklynn Piatt and beloved brother, Lawrence N. (Jane) Carter. Family and friends will gather beginning at 12:00pm on Monday, May 8th at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and conclude at time of Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 pm. Burial follows at Crown Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Patty’s name are suggested to Indiana University Melvin & Bren Simon Cancer Center.
