Norman was born on November 12, 1930, in Kingsport, TN, to Charles and Alice (Bush) Ellis. He professed to Christ at an early age and was baptized at Second Christian Church under the leadership of Reverend RH Peoples.
Norman was a veteran of the Korean War and served in the Air Force as a Senior Ground Radio Operator.
He graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1948 where he was a member of the varsity basketball team. According to legend his picture can still be seen on the wall today.
On April 2, 1954, Norman united in holy matrimony to his loving and devoted wife, Sadie Mae Broadnax. To this union seven children were born.
Norman was employed as a Supervisor with the United States Postal Service. He worked for more than thirty years before retiring in 1985.
Norman is preceded in death by his loving wife Sadie.Mae Ellis, his parents, four brothers, sister, mother-in-law, grandson (David R. Ellis) and granddaughter (Miracle Ellis).
Norman was a family man, and nothing was more comforting to him than when he could get all his children and grandchildren together at the same time. Christmas was his favorite holiday. It brought him so much joy to have everyone opening the gifts he had chosen and watching the expression on their faces when they realized it was one of his Finger Hut purchases. He would have something for anyone that would come to the house.
Norman was a sports enthusiast. He played basketball in several park leagues and tournaments. He was a part of a traveling volleyball league for many years. He was also part of a senior tennis league. He enjoyed watching sports of all kinds, but he loved his Indianapolis Pacers and Colts. If he wasn't wearing blue and gold, he was rocking the blue and white. He also attended the 1984 and 1996 Summer Olympic Games. In addition to sports, he loved to follow politics and watch old westerns.
Norman was a devoted husband and beloved father. He leaves behind five daughters, Constance R. Highbaugh, Michelle L. Ellis, Alice F. Moss (Bennett), Barbara A. Thompson, Angela S. Ellis, two sons David C. Ellis (Cynthia), and Brian D. Ellis, Nine grandchildren, Michael A. Highbaugh, Sr., Deleise Y. Fasehun (Kelvin), Clarence J. Highbaugh, Jr.(Shonika), Bennett L. Moss, Jr., Tracie M. Johannsen (Brent), Trey Davis, Sasha C. Martin, Symeon Holiman and Drake A. Ellis. Three great-grandchildren, Michele D. Bailey, Michael A. Highbaugh, Jr., Zora A Johannsen, two great-great grandchildren, Amya Bailey and Aleigha Bailey; and a loving host of other extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, November 13, 2022, 1:00 p.m. at Crown Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery. Minister Tonda Nomessi, Officiating. Burial will be Monday, November 14,2022 at Crown Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Crown Hill Funeral Home and Cemetery.
