Mary Ann’s life began on January 20, 1942, the daughter of William E. and Mary J. (O’Brien) Moran. Mary Ann grew up in Indianapolis, attending St. Joan of Arc grade school and graduating from Ladywood High School in 1959. Upon graduation she attended Cardinal Cushing College, St. Mary of the Lake in South Bend and finished up her education at IU in Bloomington.
Mary Ann spent several years as an elementary school teacher and substitute teacher at St. Marks. She lived with her mother during this time. She saw the need to become not only her mother’s companion, but to eventually become her caregiver as her mother aged. One of the perks of her caregiver role was to spend the good part of the summer in her favorite place, Palisades Park, Michigan. Mary Ann loved the Park’s summertime community. She was most at home swimming in Lake Michigan.
Growing up, Mary Ann faced some challenges. In her early years she had many surgeries on her feet. These challenges were difficult, but they seemed to help her become more resilient at a young age. One of her favorite activities was dancing. She could entertain her brothers dancing the jitterbug while doing the dinner dishes.
As Mary Ann grew older, she drew strength from her faith and the power of prayer. One of her friends said she had the Prayer to St. Anthony on speed dial on her phone. “She was ready to pray for anyone or anything” said one of her prayer group friends. Their prayer group was called the FBI (Faithful, Believers, Inspired). At one point, one prayer group wasn’t enough. She joined another group at Our Lady of Greenwood. It was faith and prayer that moved Mary Ann, but it was also the social part too. She loved being with people and her friends loved her company.
Mary Ann is survived by three of her siblings: Dr. Bill Moran of Cincinnati, Dr. Tom (Thelma) Moran of Greenwood, Mike Moran (Paula Barta) of Spring Green, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Dr. Jim Moran, Sister-in-law Mary Beth Moran, and nephew Matt Moran.
She is also survived by many nieces and nephews: Bill (Ann) Moran, Mary Moran, Dr. Brion (Rebecca) Moran, Meghan (David) Fritzpatrick, Moira (Mike) Veech, Tom (Liz) Moran, Ryan (Sherri) Moran, Erin (Tony) Valant, Eric Moran, Ellen (Drew) Ahlers, Lynn Williams, Jenny (Cliff) Fiscus, Ellie (Tim Gittings) Barta-Moran, Katie (Chris) Alexander.
A memorial Mass will be held on Monday, March 11, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Marks Church, 535 Edgewood, Indianapolis. She will be laid to rest next to her parents in Holy Cross Cemetery.
