Lenora Hooks

Lenora Hooks, age 84, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Monday, March 7, 2022. Lenora was born June 11, 1937 in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Emma (Dotson) Yelladay and William Yelladay, Sr. She is also preceded in death by her son, Lawrence E. Hooks and sister, Vedora Ligon. Lenora went to IPS 37 and was a 1956 graduate of Warren Central High School before attending Indiana Central College. She worked at L.S. Ayers and Co., the Army Finance Center at Fort Benjamin Harrison, and Indianapolis Life Insurance during her working years, but she was mostly focused on caring for her home and family with the love of her life, Lawrence. They would have celebrated 65 years of marriage on March 19th and their love will continue as always. Lenora was also a faith filled woman and active member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She was a member of the Greeters, Goldenaires Club, a past Deaconess, member of the Unity Sunday School Class, and taught Vacation Bible School. Lenora loved watching sports and was an avid Pacers and Colts fan. You could always hear her yelling, “Aw Come On!” when the scores were behind. She also loved crocheting blankets, hats, and baby booties, and even “graduated” from flower making school back in the early 1990’s. Westerns such as The Lone Ranger, Bat Masterson, and Gunsmoke were among her favorite tv shows as well as Walker Texas Ranger and Matlock. Lenora always had a word of advice and if you weren’t careful, she would make you stop what you were doing to listen to that advice. She had an infectious laugh that will be sorely missed. Lenora is survived by her husband of nearly 65 years, Lawrence O. Hooks; children, Sharon L. Hooks, Jay P. Hooks (Vicky), and Charla Marie Hooks; daughter-in-law, Elaine; sister, Rosetta Mathis; brother, William Yelladay, Jr. grandchildren, Eddie, Eric, April, Alicia, Dwayne, Patricia, Sean, Omar, Tyler, Chase, and Dion; 17 great grandchildren; and a host of extended family and friends. Visitation for Lenora will be held Monday, March 14, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 3500 Graceland Ave, Indianapolis, Indiana 46208, followed by her Homegoing Service at 12:00 PM. Lenora will be laid to rest in Crown Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery, 700 W. 38th St., Indianapolis, IN 46208.
