John Joseph Kelly, 77, of Indianapolis, passed away January 6, 2020 at Franciscan Hospice House in Indianapolis. John was born in Saint Louis, Missouri the son of the late James and Ella Winifred "Winnie" (Hunsicker) Kelly. He attended Purdue University and graduated from IUPUI. He retired as Chief Comptroller with Hooks Drugs.
John instilled many gifts within his family. These include his love of music, movies, fishing, Notre Dame Football, washing cars on Sunday and sweeping the garage.
A devout Catholic, John was an active parishioner with St. Simon beginning with his marriage to Sally in 1964. He was past president of the parish council, active in Christ Renews His Parish, plus spent many summer nights grilling corn at the parish festival.
John was a family man who could often be seen playing bridge, golfing, photographing family events and cutting "interesting" newspaper articles for delivery to various family members. John was preceded in death by his wife, Sally E. Wagner Kelly and his grandson, Daniel.
John is survived by his children, Mary Mahoney and her husband Michael, Bridget Scales and her husband Stoney, John Kelly, Jr. and his wife Amber, Meghan Smith and her husband Brad; grandchildren, Kelly, Sean, Christopher, Gabriel, Ian, Thomas, Elijah, Abraham and Emily; his sister's, Kathleen and Ann Kelly; his brother, Michael Kelly; 5 nieces, 4 nephews, 8 great-nieces and 7 great-nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2020 at St. Simon The Apostle Catholic Church, 8155 Oaklandon Rd., Indianapolis, Indiana with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery. Visitation will be held Friday, January 10, 2020 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Feeney-Hornak Shadeland Mortuary, 1307 N. Shadeland Ave., Indianapolis, Indiana. There will also be visitation 1 hour prior to the mass at the church on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Simon The Apostle Catholic Church.
John leaves us all with the lasting example of how an honorable man should lead his life.
