John Phillips Isenbarger

John Phillips Isenbarger, 76, of Fishers, Indiana passed away on March 7th, 2024. He was born on December 5th, 1947, in Muncie, Indiana, to the late John P "Jack" Isenbarger and Elizabeth "Jean" Phillips. Isenbarger is survived by his two loving sons, Jake (Kristi) Isenbarger and Luke (Kristine) Isenbarger, as well as six adoring grandchildren; Jake’s children - Scarlett, Beau, Wynnie, and Billy Luke and Luke’s children - Ollie and Lilly Kathe. John is also survived by his brothers Phil (Jenny) Isenbarger and Tom (Cindy) Isenbarger, along with beloved nephews Tom (Annie) Isenbarger, Scott (Lauren) Isenbarger, Matt (Sarah) Isenbarger, Jack (Ashleigh) Isenbarger and niece Katie Isenbarger. John graduated from Muncie Central High School and attended and graduated from Indiana University in 1970 where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was a distinguished athlete and member of Indiana University's 1968 Rose Bowl football team. He achieved numerous accolades during his football career at Indiana University, Bloomington, where he was a two-time All-Big Ten selection and one of the school's top rushers. Notably, he was one of only four IU football players to receive first team All-American recognition twice. John's contributions to the sport were further recognized when he was inducted into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991. John played four seasons for the San Francisco 49ers between 1970 and 1973. In 1974, he signed with the Hawaiians of the upstart World Football League (WFL) where he had his best season as a pro. He retired from playing football following the 1974 season. John went on to pursue a career in sales and resided in the Chicago and Indianapolis areas. John was charismatic, sensitive and he loved people. He enjoyed golfing with friends, relaxing on weekends at Lake Wawasee and visiting dear friends in California and Florida. John never missed a birthday or a holiday, and he was always caring and thoughtful sending cards and flowers to his family. Perhaps his most coveted role was being a grandfather. John’s grandchildren lovingly called him “Chappa” and his license plate proudly displayed his nickname. John loved being a grandfather and he was so proud of his sons and their families. He enjoyed keeping up with his grandchildren’s interest, and the walls of his home were covered in pictures of them all. John was very proud of his family and made sure they knew that. John Isenbarger will be greatly missed by his family and friends. A celebration of life to honor his memory and legacy will be held on Tuesday, March 26th. A memorial service will commence at 3p at Ritz Charles Chapel followed by a reception from 4p-7p at Ritz Charles Magnolia Ballroom 12156 North Meridian Street, Carmel, Indiana 46032.
