Indianapolis – Jill Dennett, 81, of Fishers, IN passed away on January 27th after being diagnosed with AML in December. Jill was born on July 12, 1940 in Indianapolis to Joe and Dorothy Carter. She was a lifelong Indianapolis area resident, spending 39 years in Speedway and the last 19 years of her life in Fishers. She was a member of the St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 61 years, Ted Dennett, her daughter April (Curtis) Rector, and her sons Joe (Mia) Dennett, Ben (Susan) Dennett, her sister Barbara Powell, and her eight grandchildren Christian (Julia) Rector, Anne (Troy) Sambyal, Aaron Rector, Isabelle and Will Dennett, and Ross (Ali) Abel, Stella and Wesley Dennett, and her five great grandchildren Lyla and Xander Sambyal, Carter Rector, and Mia and Georgie Abel.
Jill graduated from Washington High School in 1958. She got her teaching degree from Ball State University and her master’s degree from Indiana University. She was a teacher for 37 years spending 35 years in the IPS School System. Most of that time she taught at her beloved School 67 where she also attended as a child. Jill’s passion was her family, but those kids at School 67 became her second family and she dedicated much of her life to them. She did not stop teaching when she retired. She held “Mimi’s Preschool” for her grandchildren and great grandchildren right up until she passed away.
Jill was an avid sports fan and a big IU Basketball fan. Even though she had two sons, a daughter-in-law, and a granddaughter graduate from Purdue, she could not be swayed from the Hoosiers. One of her biggest joys was watching her children and grandchildren play sports and she rarely missed a game. She loved playing cards with her friends and family and was always the most competitive player at the table. But her real passion and pride & joy was her family. She dedicated her entire life to them and derived so much happiness from just being with all of them. The love she gave will be cherished for a lifetime.
Services will be held at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, 100 W 86th Street, Indianapolis, IN on Monday, February 7th at 11am with a Celebration of Life following at the Prairie View Golf Club, 7000 Longest Dr., Carmel, IN. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation can be made to The Indianapolis Public Schools Foundation at www.ipsfund.org.
