James Prentice Coffman, 82 passed away peacefully on July 25, 2024, surrounded by family, at St. Francis Hospice House in Indianapolis after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Slaughters, Kentucky to James Jackson and Allie Rae (Chandler) Coffman. Jim, or Prentice as his family called him, graduated in 1960 from Penn High School, and then served in the US Army. After his honorable discharge, Jim attended Bethel University and eventually earned his BS Degree in Agriculture from Andrews University. While at Bethel, he met his wife Lois (Geiger) and they celebrated 56 years of marriage in March. Jim and Lois settled in Goshen, IN. He retired from UPS after 30 years of dedicated service. They moved to Indianapolis in 2017 to be closer to their grandchildren.
He was an active member of Bethel Missionary Church in Goshen where he served in many capacities–Sunday school teacher, small group leader, deacon, and facilitated Operation Christmas Child–a mission for which he held a strong passion. He was a dedicated follower of Christ. His faith was important to him and strived to be a student of the Bible. He loved his farmette and gardening, was an avid reader, and lifelong Cubs and Bears fan.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Lois, son Thomas (Kathryn) and grandsons William and Alexander, son Matthew (Brook), three brothers, Bruce (Sandy), Monty (Jacki), Michael (Janice), two sisters Brenda, and Pamela (Greco), brother-in-law John Geiger (Barbara) and sister-in-law Sarah Stouffer (Allen). Jim loved his large family and enjoyed visiting and playing the family sport, croquet.
Burial in the VA section of Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis Friday, August 23, 2024 at 11:00 AM with a memorial to follow at 3PM at Indian Creek Christian Church where he attended.
