Raised the eldest son out of 9 siblings and was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Clara Mable and Julia, brothers Herman and William, second wife Joan, and step daughter Carol. Charles is survived by his wife, Dorothea Parker-Poindexter, two brothers and three sisters, son Jay Poindexter, daughter Karin Estrada, God-daughter Roxanne Robinson, and many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.
Charles graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1953 and served in the Army of the United States from February 27, 1953 to February 23, 1955 as a Corporal. He worked various times in his life at Hygrade Plant, Bookwalters, and retired from Allison Transmission. He was very involved in organizations such as UAW local 933, NAACP and NOW.
His love for history lead him to volunteer as a tour guide at Crown Hill Cemetery as well as reenact Rev. Garland White, a historical figure from the Civil War Era. He also led walking tours in downtown Indianapolis. Charles also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and the Fathers Resource Program (Fathers & Families Center).
Charles' love for travel took him vacationing nationally and around the world. He was friendly to everyone he encountered and there was never a stranger in his presence. He also enjoyed the arts and frequently attended the theater. Charles had a zest for planting flowers and one could see his beautiful creations at all of his residencies.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
