Betty attended public school 26 Elementary, and later attended Crispus Attucks High School. Betty attended the 327 Toledo St. Church Of God In Christ, Indianapolis, In. Betty loved God and loved going to church, where she gave her life to Christ at an early age. Betty loved music and was gifted by God with a beautiful voice. She used her voice to bless the ears of God’s people and traveled throughout the state of Indiana singing with a traveling Gospel trio. Church is where Betty met her best friend Willie Ed Bartlett, who soon became her husband. Betty Jane Russ and Willie Edward Bartlett became husband and wife in 1950 and became the proud parents of 10 children. With 10 children Betty became a work at home mother, where she raised her children at the Church of God in Christ on 24th and Ralston.
After her children were older, Betty began working at Regency Electronics and later worked for United Way and 5th Third Bank. On most mornings you could find Betty getting her walk in on Fall Creek Parkway, or working in her yard, where she loved taking care of her flowers, that she would adorn her house with. If you visited her, you would find her listening to her favorite song, “You know My Name” by Tasha Cobbs Leonard.
Betty was proceeded in death by her childhood love and husband Willie Edward Bartlett, and two of their sons, Robert Bartlett, and Anthony Rodriguez Bartlett. She is survived by her children: Sheila Johnson, William (Lola), Debra, Jerry, Francis, Maranda, Roxanne, and Shelley. 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and 6 great, great grandchildren, her sister Shirley Anderson and a host of nieces and nephews.
