BENJAMIN PAUL VAN WYKE
Dr. Benjamin P. Van Wyke passed away on September 23, 2017. He was born in Lexington, South Carolina to Helen (deceased) and Paul Van Wyke on February 4th,1976.
Growing up, he was active in Forest Lake Presbyterian Church (FLPC). Ben graduated from Richland NE High School and from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI.
Ben lived and worked in Spain for 5 years and during his travels he met his wife, Ana Vicente. They moved to the USA to pursue graduate studies. In 2004, Ben helped launch the first PhD program in Translation Studies in the US at Binghamton University. After his graduation, Ben became a professor in the Department of World Languages and Culture at Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis. He received multiple awards for teaching excellence and his work was published and presented around the world.
Ben is preceded in death by his mother, Helen O. Van Wyke, and his beloved wife, Ana Vicente. He is survived by Paul and Jane (step mother) Van Wyke, sisters Kelly (Gabriel) Fleming and Rebecca Van Wyke, brother David Van Wyke, step-sisters Kate, Hannah and Molly Davis, nieces, Ella, Miriam, and Susanna Fleming, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and adopted family around the world. Ben was surrounded by family and friends during his final days. He was showered with love, and he poured it back with grace and humor.
A service of thanksgiving to God for the life of Ben is scheduled at FLPC on December 16, 2017 at 11am in the Fellowship Hall.
