Amir Khosrow Naghdi

Amir Khosrow Naghdi, age 95, of Indianapolis, Indiana passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023. Amir was born on October 19, 1928 in Tehran, Iran to Ali-Asghar and Shokat Naghdi. Amir graduated from the University of Tehran. After graduation, he served in the Iranian military as a tank commander. In 1957, Amir came to the United States to obtain his Master's Degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Illinois. He then went to Purdue University to pursue his PhD. At his graduation, it was said he "set the standard, not only for the students, but for the faculty too." Amir met Kathleen Vaughan in the student union building at Purdue. He saw Kathleen playing the piano and asked her out on a date. They married on August 13, 1960. Amir and Kathleen settled in Indianapolis and raised 8 kids. Amir taught at IUPUI from 1966 to 1995. From 1995 until 2010, Amir continued to teach one class and tutor students at IUPUI. He also wrote over 50 research papers.
Amir was an excellent swimmer and he swam across Tar Lake in Iran. He loved to visit Indiana State Parks, mainly Spring Mill State Park, McCormick's Creek and Turkey Run. Amir had an excellent memory and counted each visit to Turkey Run, totaling 92 visits. He loved the Indianapolis Colts and Purdue basketball. In his free time, Amir loved to watch Gunsmoke, Bonanza and he especially loved Rock Hudson and Doris Day movies.
Amir is survived by his children, Robert (Kimberly) Naghdi, Linda (Ed) Rafacz, Paul Naghdi, Adam "Joseph" Naghdi, Michael Naghdi and Irene (Al) Kovacs; grandchildren, Emily Naghdi, Caitlyn Naghdi, Clare Naghdi, Elizabeth Naghdi, Jonathan Naghdi, John Rafacz, Christopher Kovacs, Matthew Kovacs, Catherine Kovacs and Madeline Kovacs; and niece, Cynthia Vanhooser and nephew, Alireza Farsad.
Amir is preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Naghdi; son, Bejan Naghdi; daughter, Frances Moore; parents, Ali-Asghar Naghdi and Shokat Naghdi; siblings, Jack, Rafat and Shahla.
A visitation for Amir will be held on Friday, December 1, 2023 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Feeney Hornak Keystone Mortuary, 2126 E. 71st Street, Indianapolis, IN 46220. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 11:00 AM at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 1916 Meharry Street, Lafayette, IN 47904. Amir will be laid to rest at St. Mary's Cemetery in Lafayette.
