Erville Corinne Truitt Hartnett of Independence died peacefully on June 17, 2024 at the Independence Manor Nursing Home surrounded by her loved ones. She was 99 years old. Corinne was born in Independence on December 5, 1924, to Lec and Virgie Truitt. She and her brother, Curtis, grew up in Independence on a farm which is now the location of the Home Depot.
Corinne was a 1943 graduate of William Chrisman High School in Independence, MO and with the world at war, she went to work at the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant delivering mail to help support the war effort. She met and married her high school sweetheart, John Edward Hartnett, who was also a 1943 graduate of William Chrisman High School. After completing US Navy Boot Camp in Great Lakes, while on leave, the two were married in 1944 then headed to Long Beach, CA where John was stationed on the seaplane tender USS Half Moon. Corrine enjoyed her time in California and often spoke of her many adventures she had during that time.
After John completed his time in the US Navy, both knew that Independence was home, so they returned and started their family; with Corrine serving as a devoted homemaker throughout her life. She and John remained married until his death, for the next 67 years. Corrine loved driving in her car and shopping each day to collect what she called her treasures. She also loved teaching children in her 3rd Grade Sunday School class about Jesus at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Independence for over 30 years. Her real enjoyment was found in her arts/crafts, painting, writing poems and the many letters she wrote throughout her life to her family and friends.
