He graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a teaching degree and was a 6th grade teacher. He married Lois Urbanowski in 1952. They were blessed with 8 children.
Dave was very involved in the National Education Association. When the opportunity came to be a director for the IEA, the family later moved to Idaho. The couple later divorced. Dave married Diane Downey in 1979 and they then moved to Boise, Idaho. In December 1994 he retired from the IEA and worked part time as a consultant.
He enjoyed retirement and was kept busy by a variety of interests: reading, fishing, skiing, cooking, bridge, traveling, praying, reading the Bible , going to daily Mass and various ministries in the Catholic Church. His favorite travel became pilgrimages and he felt so blessed to travel to Medjugorje, Italy, Lourdes, Venezuela and various shrines in the US.
He was an active Eucharistic Minister and Lector. He took Holy Communion to the sick and had a prison ministry for 6 years. He was a member of Knights of Columbus since 1976.
In 2007, Dave and Diane moved to Idaho Falls to be near Diane's mother and sister. He enjoyed living in Idaho Falls and loved Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
Dave is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Diane, Katrina Nimtz, 7 of his 8 children: Linda Hahn, Kathy Nelson, Michael, Craig (Teri), Jeff (Mary), Brian (Denise), Tim (Robbi) Nimtz and his brother Dick (Lois) Nimtz, 24 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren and Diane's sister, Carolyn Martineau and her family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 8 siblings, his son Patrick and Diane's parents, Red and Ramona Downey.
A Rosary Vigil will be held Thursday, March 1st at 6:00 p.m. at Buck-Miller-Hann funeral home at 825 E 17th street, Idaho Falls, Idaho. The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, March 2nd at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Church 905 S .Lee Ave, Idaho Falls, Idaho.
