Osterville, Peter L. Gurney Sr., of Osterville passed away peacefully on 01 August, surrounded by his loving and adoring family after a brief illness. He was the husband of Marie C. Gurney nee O’Donnell.
Born in New Bedford he was the son of the late Leonard and Jacqueline Gurney. He was a communicant of Our Lady of The Assumption Church.
Survivors include his son, Peter L. Gurney Jr. and his wife Celeste of Aliso Viejo, CA. His daughter Pamela L. Suprenant and her husband Richard of Rutland MA., and a granddaughter Christine Gurney of Aliso Viejo, CA.
He was the brother John Gurney, Paul Gurney, James Gurney and the late Lynne Gurney.
After graduating from New Bedford high school where he was a standout football player, he attended nursing school in Boston. He married Diane Grits and they had two children. He served in the US Army for nearly 15 years, highlights include service in Vietnam where he was attached to a forward surgical field hospital, followed by stints as an anesthetist in El Paso, West Berlin, Ft. Leonard Wood, and San Francisco where he separated from active service.
He returned to New Bedford and continued to practice anesthesia in Plymouth. He eventually settled in Osterville, amongst family and friends where he retired. An avid golfer, he represented the US Army in competitive tournaments as well as being a fixture on the regional four-ball circuit and course.
Mass will be at 10:30am August 4th at Our Lady of Assumption Parish in Osterville, MA. Visiting hours will be from 4-7pm on Thursday, August 3rd at Doane, Beal & Ames, 160 West Main Street, Hyannis MA.
