Joan Alice (Yates) Richardson, age 86, of East Dennis and formerly of Winchester, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2019. Born in Cincinnati, OH, March 1, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Grace (Gourlay) and Sampson W. Yates.
Joan graduated from The Williams School in New London, CT and then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from The Bouvé School at Tufts University. It was at Tufts that she met her late husband, Dr. Philip E. Richardson; they married following her graduation in 1955. The newly married couple moved to Philadelphia, PA so that Phil could attend dental school at the University of Pennsylvania and Joan accepted a position at Jenkintown High School teaching physical education and coaching field hockey. Four years later, they returned to the Boston area and settled in Winchester where they lived for almost 50 years.
Throughout her life, Joan enjoyed being active, playing tennis and golf, and for years was a member of the Winchester Country Club and the Cummaquid Golf Club of Yarmouth Port. As national interest in the sport of tennis grew, Joan and Phil saw a need for youth tennis activities in Winchester and started the Spring Girls and Boys Tennis Ladder at the Packer-Ellis Courts. Throughout the years, they organized many local tennis tournaments for both youth and adults. Joan was active in the community as a member of The Winton Club and a volunteer for the EnKa Society and the Friends of the Winchester Hospital. Retiring to Cape Cod in 2003, Joan remained an active athlete but focused her energies on the golf course. She was an avid reader and devotee of The Wall Street Journal and the stock market. She was deeply invested in the care and education of both her children and her grandchildren.
She is survived by her sister, Marilyn Y. Stanton; her loving daughters, Cheryl Richardson-Wagner (Leonard) of Moorestown, NJ, Kathleen Winkler (Eric), of Bourne, MA, and Dr. Sarah E. Richardson (Maria T. Feicht) of Belmont, MA; and, her three grandchildren, Emily W. Sheridan (Daniel) of Quincy, MA, Jonathan Winkler of Boxborough, MA, and Caroline R. Wagner of Boston, MA. Joan was sister to the late Sampson Yates, M. Kathleen Yates, and Judith Y. Winn.
