James Gaff Hinkle Jr, of Cummaquid, died on May 25, 2024 after a brief illness. He was born in Boston on August 8, 1937 to James G. Hinkle Sr. and Mary Francis Hinkle. He was predeceased by his sister Sydney Buffum and his brother Joseph Hinkle. He leaves his sister-in-law Sally Hinkle and nephews and nieces: Sydney Crampton, Robert Buffum (Linda), James Buffum (DeeDee), Ned Hinkle (Ivy Moylan) and Sarah Slubowski (Christian). He is survived by his spouse Roy Hammer. Having met and become life partners 59 years ago, they were married May 30, 2004 when same sex marriage was legalized. They had lived 21 years in Boston as educators. They moved to Cummaquid in 1986 and in 1987 opened Cummaquid Fine Arts. They retired in 2004 and in later years enjoyed European travel. Jim graduated from St. Marks School and Yale University in 1959. Born to privilege, Jim learned of life’s inequities and became philanthropic. You may contribute to the charity of your choice.
