Mr. Arthur J. Sullivan, Jr., a resident of Edgewater, Florida, and former longtime resident of West Barnstable, passed away at home on Thursday, November 29, 2012. He was 72 years old.
Born on February 10, 1940 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Arthur, was one of three children of the late Arthur J. and Anna Genevieve (Tucy) Sullivan. He was predeceased by his sister Denise “Denny” Cullen, is survived by his brother Kevin, his former wife of 31 years Marcia (Doyle) Sullivan and their six children - Michael of Hyannis, Sean of Marstons Mills, Eileen Putman of East Sandwich, Dennis of Provincetown, Timothy of Dennis, and Matthew of Boynton Beach, Florida. He truly enjoyed the blessings of ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, cousins and many loving friends.
Raised in Arlington, MA, he attended Arlington High School where he played football on the State Championship Team. He enlisted in and served our country in the U.S. Army from 1959-62. In 1972 he moved to Cape Cod with Marcia and their children to be close to Sandy Neck Beach. He left his carpentry business to open Cape Discount Tire in West Barnstable, which he operated for over 25 years.
“Fast Arthur”, was affectionately known for many things in the community, especially with his connection to Sandy Neck. He provided towing services, tires, off-road equipment, auto repair, gas and free air for after-beach fill-ups.
Arthur was a loving man who appreciated the many gifts of his sobriety over the last 30 years. He enjoyed riding his bicycle on the beach and walking with his best pal, his Golden Retriever, Salty. He loved people, shared his heart freely with all he encountered, and encouraged others to do the same. It was so important for him to help other people. When asked how he was, his usual reply was, “It’s the Best Day of My Life!”.
All are invited to visit on Tuesday, December 11 from 4-8pm at Doane, Beale & Ames Funeral Home - 160 West Main Street in Hyannis. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday 10:30am at Corpus Christi Church-324 Quaker Meeting House Road East Sandwich, MA. Interment will follow at Bourne National Veteran’s Cemetery, Connery Road Bourne MA.
