September 2, 1937-January 1, 2024
Shirley was born in Roanoke Virginia to Creed and Ruby Roop.
She was preceded in death by her parents and son Kenny, survivors include daughter Cindy Tanner her husband Steve. Her grandchildren Brooke Pruitt (Justin), and Tyler McDaniel (Alicia). And “the children” Owen, Grace Ann, Walker, and Charlotte Pruitt, Sutton and Cayden McDaniel.
Shirley was very active for a Grandmother and Great-Grandmother.
She loved hiking the Smokey Mountains where she often hiked the Mt. LeConte trail-the 3rd highest peak in the National Park. It is an 11-mile, strenuous trail that takes you along the Alum Cave Creek, through a forest of evergreen trees, and where sections are carved into the rocky cliffs with the trail dropping off the side of the mountain. This would deter a lot of folks but not Shirley. The hikes were a family affair as she hiked with her daughter and granddaughter. On Mother’s Day the year prior to the stroke, one of her great granddaughters joined them on the hike-4 generations-Shirley, Cindy, Brooke, and 9 year old Grace Ann-reaching the summit of Mt.LeConte. A feat not attained by many.
Shirley was also an avid ‘walker’ and she loved line dancing at the Senior Center. And if hiking, walking, and dancing was not enough, she participated in local races well into her 80’s (The Cotton row Run, Liz Hurley Ribbon Run) where she often had the best time for her age group. Her family joined her on these events as well. Oh how she will be missed.
