John Angelo Taormina, 101, died peacefully at home on June 12 after a long bout with dementia. John was the third of four boys born to Frank Taormina and Clorinda Amore on September 18, 1919 in Akron, Ohio; the husband to Edna Riley for 78 years; father to Larry Taormina and Karen Walker; grandfather to Teri Lynne Neiland, Tiffany Nicole Davis, and Jonathan Walker; great-grandfather to Clay Neiland, Nicolas Davis, Callie Neiland, Noah Davis, and Emily Walker.
John was a Staff Sergeant in the 3rd Battalion 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, jumping on D-Day of June 6, 1944. He was captured and spent the remainder of the war as a POW. John was later detailed to Redstone Arsenal in 1959 and retired from the military in 1964 to join Sears. He retired from Sears in 1984 rising to Warehouse Manager. John was an avid golfer and shot two holes-in-one, consistently shooting under his age. He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also affectionately known as Terry, Tony and Gramps. He was a Christian and attended the Jordan Park Church of Christ. He could always be found working on his lawn and gardens or enjoying golf with everyone. He will be missed.
A visitation for John will be held Thursday, June 17, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Valhalla Funeral Home, a celebration of life will follow at 11:00 AM. Entombment at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
