Idola Mae "Dola" Knickerbocker, age 86, of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on Thursday, November 11, 2021. Dola was born January 8, 1935 in Pisgah, AL to the late Vester and Catherine Newberry. She was always proud of the fact that her and Elvis Presley were born on the same month, day and year. Besides her parents is preceded in death by her husband Edwin Knickerbocker, brothers Carvel "Bud" Newberry and John Newberry. Dola graduated from Pisgah High School Class of 1953. She Graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute in 1956, majoring in Food/Nutrition (Dietitian). In 1956 API changed its name to Auburn University. While interning in New York, she met the love of her life Edwin Knickerbocker. They were married in 1959 in Ashville, NC.
Idola worked 32 years Civil Service at Fox Army Hospital, Redstone Arsenal as Chief Dietitian earning many Civil Service Awards. In the early 1980's she was commissioned as a Major in the United States Army Reserve, serving until August of 1983. She retired from Civil Service in 1990. Dola was a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church in 1974 and was an active member of Locust Grove for many years. After retiring, she traveled. volunteered at Huntsville Hospital, and was very active in the Hurricane Creek Community Center. Dola had a great sense of humor, loved to laugh, play games and watch college and Pro Football on TV (especially her Auburn Tigers).
Dola is survived by her loving children Tim Knickerbocker and his wife Teresa and Gary Knickerbocker and his wife Ashley. Grandson Paul Knickerbocker and his wife Molly.
Visitation for Dola will be held Monday, November 15, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Valhalla Funeral Home, 698 Winchester Rd Ne, Huntsville, Alabama 35811. Following the visitation will be a the celebration of life service at 11:00 AM at Valhalla Funeral Home Chapel, 698 Winchester Rd Ne, Huntsville, Alabama 35811.
