Born on October 1, 1961, in Tianmen, China, Tianbao was the son of Shuier Lu (father) and Yinzhi Zhou (mother). As the eldest of four siblings and having lost his own father at a young age, Tianbao assumed the role of family leader early on and became a steadfast pillar for his younger siblings, a quality he carried throughout his whole life. He attended Wuhan University for his Bachelors and Masters in Chemistry, but more importantly, where he fell in love with his future wife, Litao Zhang. Thereafter, he attended Nanjing University for his PhD in Organic Chemistry.
Tianbao came to the United States soon thereafter for his Postdoctoral trainings at Miami University and Washington University in St. Louis. He built a distinguished career as a drug hunter for over 30 years at 3-Dimensional Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson. At work, he was highly regarded for his ability to spearhead the discovery of innovative small molecule therapeutics. Tianbao has over 130 patents and 100 publications with numerous high impact journals.
But more importantly, beyond his professional achievements, Tianbao was the most dedicated husband and loving father who adored his family above everything else. He was the emblem of selflessness - his love language was acts of service, never asking for anything in return. He loved to spoil his wife and children. He was the ultimate airport dad and loved to travel and hike. He could turn a bad hand into a winning hand in any game of cards, and he loved watching football, basketball, and movies.
Tianbao is survived by his devoted wife, Litao, and his children, Michael Lu and Melissa Lu, who carry his memory in their hearts. He also leaves behind Zhiwu Lu (brother), Jiaoe Lu (sister), and Zhene Lu (sister), his three younger siblings who will forever remember his wisdom and generosity.
