Daughter of the late Paul and Elizabeth Longcope; wife of Douglas for 55 years; mother of David (Sharron) of Fitchburg, MA, and Jeffrey (Jennifer) of Doylestown, PA; grandmother of Trinity and Torah, Fitchburg, MA; sister of the late Jean Caputo and Eileen Pugliese, New Providence, PA.
Mary grew up in Ambler, PA, and graduated from Ambler High School in 1961. During her years at Wilson College, where she majored in German, she enjoyed playing intramural field hockey and basketball and was active in the German Club. After graduating from Wilson in 1965, she worked as a programmer/analyst at Providential Mutual Life Insurance Company of Philadelphia. She and Doug married in 1969 and have lived in Warminster, PA, since 1971. In 1990 she received her Masters in Library Science from Drexel University and taught as a school librarian. After her retirement, she served as a part-time reference librarian at Warminster Library. For many years she enjoyed her volunteer work with VITA teaching English as a Second Language to students from the Ukraine, Mexico, Cambodia, and other countries. Mary loved get-togethers with family and friends, especially playing strategy games, and walking her beloved grand-dogs.
She and Doug enjoyed many biking trips, especially to Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and Maryland; skied the slopes of New England; visited several National Parks; and traveled to England, Scotland, Germany, Austria, Israel, Jordan, Greece, Italy, and Spain. Mary also went on a mission trip to Guatemala in 2017 as a “go-for” to aid the medical team performing cleft lip palate surgeries. In her senior years she kept active walking 2 to 3 miles a day.
Mary’s home church has been Calvary Chapel of Philadelphia, where she enjoyed serving as a greeter, being a chaplain, and taking part in the Women’s Bible Study. For a number of years she attended Jesus Focus Bible studies and prayer and praise meetings. Mary loved Jesus and is rejoicing to be home with Him.
A public visitation for Mary will be held Friday, October 4, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Calvary Chapel of Philadelphia, 13500 Philmont Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19116, followed by a funeral service. After which, a burial will take place at 12:00 PM in Forest Hills Cemetery, 25 Byberry Road, Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania 19006.
