When she was born, she was not breathing and were it not for the persistence of her grandmother, MoMo, she would not have lived, but because of this she was deaf. When she was about 6 years old, she attended at the Louisiana School for the Deaf in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She lived there during the entire school year and was very active in school, participating in sports, clubs, and theatre – where she even played Beth from Little Women. She graduated in 1955 and began work as a key punch operator for the Louisiana Department of Public Safety.
She made many lifelong deaf friends during her school years and throughout her life.
After graduation, she met the love of her life – a Texan named Rubin Merrell Sims. They were married on July 7, 1956 and moved to Houston, Texas.
In Houston, she continued working as a key punch operator for the Houston Police Department. However, once Dale was born, she decided to become a stay-at-home mom. She now has three children, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Faye could do anything she put her mind to and had many hobbies (reading, drawing, painting, sewing, needlepoint, quilting, crocheting, gardening, etc.) but her favorite pastime was fishing. She always looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was extremely proud of them.
Faye gave her life fully to the Lord in the early 70’s and has been a member of Porter Apostolic Pentecostal Church since moving to Porter in 1976.
She passed away on December 21, 2022 at her home in Porter, Texas and will be laid to rest next to her husband, Rubin, at Gourd Creek Cemetery in Huntsville, Texas.
Faye is preceded in death by her husband, Rubin Merrell Sims; her parents, Willie and Gladys Lester; and her siblings Howard Lester, Mildred Alexander, Alma Alexander, Joyce Wilson, and Wayne Lester.
Faye is survived by her three children, Dale Shane Sims, Gina (Cesar) Faye Duran and Ronnie Marvin Sims, her grandchildren, Corey Duran, Allison (Thomas) Duran Cole, Sierra Sims and Savannah Sims and her great grandchildren, Toryn and Alexander Cole.
Also surviving are her siblings, Billie O’Quinn, Walter Lester, Carol Crain, and Charles Lester.
A visitation for Lucy will be held Saturday, January 7, 2023 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Porter Apostolic Pentecostal Church, 24142 TX-494 Loop, Porter, TX followed by a funeral service. A committal service will occur at 3:30 pm on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at Gourd Creek Cemetery, Huntsville, TX.
