Billie Jo Johnson, 94 of Houston, passed away Monday, July 10, 2023, at her home in the Tomball Retirement Center. Mrs. Johnson was born on September 10, 1928 in Gilmer, Texas, Upshur County to her parents Raymond and Evie Smart. Billie Jo was one of eight children born to the couple. Sadly, she was proceeded in death by all of her siblings: Kathleen, Raymond, Dorothy, Norman, Peggy, Wanda, and Alice. She is also preceded in death by her husband of nearly 60 years, Roland R. Johnson, who affectionately called her “Chicken”. The two were married on January 30th 1948 and resided in Houston’s Lindale Neighborhood, where they raised their three sons, Dean “Randy” Randall, Curtis Wayne, and Lewis William (deceased).
Mrs. Johnson joyously donated her time to her community and church. She was awarded a PTA lifetime membership award in 1966 from Rosevelt Elementary School, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother for three years for pack 231, and a volunteer for Vacation Bible School at Houston’s First Baptist Church downtown. The matriarch of a very large family, Mrs. Johnson “Grandma or Gigi” had 13 Grandchildren: Melissa, Diana Elaine (Deceased), Lewis William Jr “Bill”, Faith, Stephen, Hannah, Ryan, Aaron, Makenna, Joshua, Ashlynne, Abbey and Andrew; 13 Great Grandchildren: Sabrina (deceased), Joshua, Bayleigh, Alexi, Luis, Madeline, AJ, Mallory, Seaera, Natalia, Deuce, Jaleb, and Jordis; 3 Great-Great Grandchildren: Makaio, Kaili, and Norah
A celebration of life for Billie will be held Saturday, July 15, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Calvary Hill Funeral Home and Cem, 21723 Aldine-Westfield Road, Humble, TX 77338.
