Jim Gunn, a resident of Modesto, died at Valley Comfort care home on Friday, January 8, at the age of 91. Born in Arkansas on February 6, 1924, his family moved to Oklahoma when he was a child. He followed one of his brothers to California as a teenager and lived the rest of his life in Modesto.
Jim served in World War II and the Korean War, stationed in California both times, working as a surgical assistant. Between and after his years in the service he worked for Valley Motor Lines, first as a truck driver and later as a night dock foreman. After the closure of Valley Motor Lines he worked for M.I.D. until he retired. Jim served for many years as a volunteer fireman for the Burbank Paradise Fire Department, which he enjoyed very much.
Jim was happily married, for over 60 years, to Mary (Jones) Gunn until her death in 2010. They had three children, Larry Gunn of Modesto, Peggy Gunn of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and Harold Gunn (deceased). Jim and Mary always enjoyed camping and were members of The Good Sam trailer club. They travelled extensively throughout the U.S. and also visited their daughter in Amsterdam on several occasions. They were avid baseball fans and supported the Modesto baseball team from the 1950’s until their respective health conditions prevented them from attending games.
Jim is survived by his son, Larry, his daughter, Peggy, grandchildren Ron, Paul, Scott, Christopher and Becky and nine great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 16, at 1:00 p.m. in the Heritage Chapel at Lakewood Funeral Home, 900 Santa Fe Ave., Hughson.
