Our dad was a very special man to a lot of people. Edgar Sill was born on February 16, 1931, in Seminole, Oklahoma and came with his family to Riverbank, California when he was very young. He joined the U.S. Army at 17 years old (yes, probably the only lie he ever told was about his age so that he could fight for his country). Upon receiving an Honorable Discharge from the Army at age 20, he enlisted with the U.S. Air Force.
Ed’s first child, a daughter, Julie, was born to him and his wife, Janie, while stationed in Amarillo, Texas with the Air Force in 1956. Upon his transfer to Columbus, Ohio, another daughter, Karen, was born in 1958. After a divorce and remarriage, his youngest daughter, Gena, was born to Ed and his wife, Glenna, in Columbus, Ohio, in 1963. Ed had received an Honorable Discharge from the Air Force in 1962 and returned to his home town of Riverbank, California with his wife Glenna and their daughter, which was his third and last born child. Not long afterward, his oldest two daughters returned with their mother to California.
Ed began his new career with Sharpe’s Army Depot, repairing helicopters and other air crafts for the military as he settled down to civilian life in Riverbank. Eventually, Ed went through a second divorce after 16 years of marriage and later met Dorothy, who he married in 1980, only a few weeks after the birth of his first grandchildren, identical twin boys, Vance and Christopher. With his marriage to Dorothy, Ed acquired four step-children.
Ed was an avid fisherman and loved spending time in nature. He spent much of his leisure time hiking, camping and fishing, both fresh water and deep sea, although fly fishing was his first love, which lead to a new hobby of his, making his own fly fishing lures. When he wasn’t spending time fishing with his buddies from the ‘Delta fly fishers’(club) Which fished in many different states, such as Alaska, Oregon, Colorado and many more. He was dancing with Dorothy at various dancing clubs to which they belonged such as Forever Young and The Riverbank Dance club. His last dancing partner and Special lady over the past 5 years was Nancy.
Ed and Dorothy bought an RV after Ed’s retirement and traveled around the country sightseeing. One of their favorite trips was to the Grand Ole Opry and Opryland, which to fans of country music was a dream come true.
Our dad was a kind man, always ready to help others at the drop of a hat. He helped his kids move their residences, made repairs, installed, assembled and whatever else family, friends and neighbors needed. He was a loyal man and when Dorothy fell ill, he kept the promise he made to her that he would never place her in a care facility even though his health suffered being in his mid 80’s, he put her first to keep that promise He took care of her at home until her death in 2017.
Our dad was a strong but gentle man, loving and proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a man of great integrity and much loved by his family and friends. This much loved man passed away on February 17, one day after his 91st birthday. We will miss him so very, very much.
Ed Sill is survived by his three daughters, Julie Gleaves, Karen Easley, and Gena Brummel; and three stepchildren, Karen Guthrie (Gary), Dennis Ford (Patti), and Dorothy Ford (Ron).
